The tricky part of getting hired into any new job is demonstrating to the employer that you have what it takes. As a caregiver or a nanny, this is not easy to do – especially if your future employer is not able to observe you performing the tasks of the job. What complicates things even more is that it is nearly impossible for you to obtain a positive reference from your current employer – without resigning from your job (or getting fired). So, your written resume and your profile (a short summary of your resume) must quickly convince the employer that they should interview you. Do not undervalue or understate the true level of your experience; this is the wrong approach. In a resume, you should be so detailed about your experience that it feels like you’re bragging. That’s right, if your resume is well-written, it should make you a little embarrassed if you have to read it out loud. Why? Because your experience is probably amazing – and you’ve never given yourself credit for it. Now is not the time to be shy – show them on paper that you have what it takes. This is the key to getting the interview – and eventually landing the job!
Some Quick Tips
- Write out every single task that you have either performed or capable of performing – as it relates to the caregiver position.
- List all of the jobs that you have had to date – that are somehow relevant to being a caregiver
- Think of all of the skills that successful caregivers have. Now, write them all down – because if you thought of it, it probably applies to you.
